CURRENT CLASSES

Hot Glass Level 1 Condensed
May 2nd and 9th : 9am-3:30pm
Learn the basics of glassblowing in this closely supervised, team-driven course,
studying the effects of heating, cooling and gravity to make a cup. This course is designed to teach students to be able to do every single step on their own with closely supervised help from an instructor. Students will learn to gather glass out of the furnace, shape the glass using metal tools and inflate the glass using a blowpipe. This class is a two-day weekend course, a condensed version of our 5-week class hosted during the week. There will be a 30 min break incorporated into the class so the total length of the class is 6 hours 30 min.

VISITING ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
KGOMOTSO MTSWENI

THATO KOKWANA

In Fall 2025, Public Glass welcomed South African artists Thato Kokwana and Kgomotso Mtsweni for a glass exchange. During their time in San Francisco, the artists worked closely with the studio team and learned cane techniques with David Patchen. Kgomotso and Thato worked on a collaborative project and also gave an artist talk, sharing about their developing practices and the cultural landscape that informs their work.

Public Glass was honored to host Kgomotso and Thato as part of their glass adventures; we hope they can return in the future.
Many thanks to Mary White, glass artist and former longtime instructor at San José State University, who coordinated the glass exchange. Mary met the two artists during the 2024 Glass Safari in South Africa, where she was one of seven visiting artists working alongside students and faculty from Tshwane University of Technology at the Ngwenya Glass Factory in Eswatini.
